Artist Statement

I have been making art always, growing up in a strict Chinese school I used to get in trouble for sketching in the margins of my books. I started drawing to cover my living expenses when I was sixteen. Since then my art and style has slowly evolved, being shaped by time, place, relationship, and bereavement. In my art I strive not only for form but for life. In this pursuit of capturing I often isolate my muse from its context, I like the effect of seeing a thing as it is without the distraction of placement. I spent my childhood in a remote area of the Tibetan Plateau before moving to a farm in North Carolina and find that much of my art is inspired by Tibetan art styles from the former as well as close botanical observations inspired by the latter.

I am interested in capturing the life in a thing. Yes, art is about form and light and colour, but I am really interested in that evasive other element. That which animates a thing. The soul of the object. At the end of the creative process, it’s there or it’s not. I love the process of gently coaxing it out of the paper and medium. Like blowing a coal into flame. When it is there, I feel a sense of resolution.
